Praa Sands is a sweeping south coast beach that feels big and open, with a long stretch of sand that can
produce surprisingly lively surf when swell bends into Mount’s Bay. It has a more relaxed feel than some of
the north coast hotspots, but when conditions line up it can deliver clean, playful waves that suit a broad
range of abilities.
For surfers, the appeal is the mix of accessibility and variety. Peaks can pop up across the bay depending
on the sandbanks, and the wave shape can shift through the tide, so it is worth checking how it is breaking
before committing to one spot. On smaller days it is a great place to practise the fundamentals, while a bit
more swell can bring punchier sections that reward better timing and stronger paddling.
Praa Sands is also the kind of beach that works well for a full coastal session, not just a quick surf.
There is plenty of space to spread out, the atmosphere is laid back, and the setting has that classic south
coast contrast of softer light, wide sand, and open water. It suits surfers who want a less hectic lineup,
enjoy a beach that can surprise you when the swell arrives, and like the feeling of a proper surf in a more
sheltered corner of Cornwall.
