Gwithian offers miles of golden sand, natural shelter from the wind near the cliffs, and an excellent rock
pool area, making it a standout family-friendly beach on Cornwall’s north coast. The surf spot known as
“Sheep Dips” is a large natural pool formed between two substantial rock outcrops, deep in the middle,
gently sloping at the sides, and noticeably warmer than the open Atlantic.
There are numerous additional rock pools around the section of beach near the steps, providing plenty of
opportunity for exploration and rockpooling. This part of the coast is particularly attractive for visitors
looking to combine classic beach time with something a little more adventurous.
Gwithian is also an ideal location for learning to surf, being slightly more sheltered than neighbouring
Godrevy, which usually results in more forgiving waves. Together with a well-staffed lifeguard service
during the main season, it is a great place to get in the water for both younger and older visitors alike.
In addition to its reputation as a surf beach, Gwithian is a long-standing favourite with windsurfers and
kitesurfers. Its relatively exposed aspect and predominance of cross-shore winds create consistently
favourable conditions for these sports throughout much of the year.
